Accessories caught up with Todd Gardner, Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing at Dorfman Pacific, to discuss the company’s past, present and future.

How long have you been with the company?

21 years

What is a typical day like for you?

Exciting – from looking at new product to helping our customers and sales professionals.

What is your favorite part of this industry?

The ongoing challenges and opportunities and the ability to meet our customers headwear needs whether they be for function or fashion.

ScalaWhat have been some of the biggest challenges in the market lately?

Complexities in the market regarding testing and compliance.  Often times, we see headwear classified as apparel which is very different.

What are the newest and exciting changes in the marketplace lately? (i.e. new types of stores you sell, new ways of selling, new technologies, etc.)

The broader acceptance of headwear as a must have accessory.   Whether it be for function (UPF 50+ or to keep you warm), or fashion to complete the outfit, we have headwear to meet all of those needs.

How do you use social media and how has it helped your brand? Contests, etc.

We are starting to do more with Social Media but our efforts have been limited so far.

Does your company have any important milestones coming up? Explain

In 2016, Dorfman will be celebrating its 95th anniversary.

Are you launching anything new for Fall/Holiday 2014? (a new classification, new line, new brand, new license, new collaboration, etc.?)

Dorfman introduces several hundred new styles each season

ScalaIn terms of styling, what are you focusing on for the Fall/Holiday season? What’s the newest, exciting trends??

The cloche remains a very popular style as well as textured fabrics.  We also have an extensive collection of wool felts in the season’s hottest colors.

Which designers/runway fashion shows have been most influential for you in terms of planning your Fall/Holiday line?

Fedoras from Gucci inspired unique color stories for the new fall collection. Lady like clouches from Kate Spade and Milly were a great wearable inspirations for many of our timelessly elegant designs as well as the baseball caps seen on the Herve Leger runway show ad more structured style caps seen at Givenchy.

Are there any celebrities, bloggers, movies, TV, music festivals, etc., that are driving trends for you lately?

Music festivals and musicians who are in the press wearing hats are having a big effect on our business. At last months New Orleans Jazz Fest Santa preformed in hats from our Santana collection which brings a lot of press to the line and the headwear industry. We are also seeing a big buzz around the recent press for over the top hat wearing musicians like Pharrell.
