Chan Luu

Chan Luu is a designer of jewelry, accessories and ready to wear.

Originally from Vietnam, Luu moved to the United States in 1972 to study business at Boston University. In 1975, she moved to Los Angeles to study Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

In 1996, she began designing her own accessories, marking the beginnings of the Chan Luu brand. Luu is known in the fashion industry for her artistic ability to combine organic shapes with contemporary ideas.

In 2001, Luu designed the first wrap bracelet which has been a staple in her seasonal jewelry collections for over a decade, becoming a popular style worldwide.

The designer’s passion is to create jewelry, accessories and apparel that are unique, wearable, handmade, and most importantly inspired by cultures from around the world. “We take pride in that we always stay true to our core belief, and that our products are totally handmade with love and care by skilled artisans,” says Luu.

Accessories caught up with Chan Luu to discuss the company’s past, present and future:

What is a typical day like for you?

I am an early bird! I wake up around 5 a.m., answer my emails, assign projects out to my design team, play my piano for two hours, walk my dogs Henri and Benji, then go to work.

What is your favorite part of this industry?

Traveling the world…and getting inspired by diverse cultures.

What have been some of the biggest challenges in the market lately?

The explosion of e-commerce! Specialty stores are facing a huge challenge from e-commerce retailers.

What are the newest and exciting changes in the marketplace lately?

We do a lot of successful pop-up shops all over the world.

How do you use social media and how has it helped your brand?

We use social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to share our newest designs, style and vision to our customers globally!

Are you launching anything new for Fall/Holiday 2014?

We are launching the Chan Luu x Hello Kitty collaboration.

In terms of styling, what are you focusing on for the Fall/Holiday season? What’s the newest, exciting trends??

Our necklaces are on fire! We are showing a new way to layer with more modern and minimal styles.

Which designers/runway fashion shows have been most influential for you in terms of planning your Fall/Holiday line?

The Dries Van Noten exhibition at the Louvre was so inspiring! I am a big fan of Dries and love the detail/embroidery, prints and colors of his earlier collections.

Are there any celebrities, bloggers, movies, TV, music festivals, etc., that are driving trends for you lately?

I am most inspired by art history, culture, traveling and vintage clothing/jewelry/antiques.
