Now in its 58th year, the Bangkok Gems Jewelry Fair aims to be bigger and better. The show features 1,500 companies, 3,000 booths from selected domestic and overseas exhibitors.

Accessories caught up with Malee Choklumlerd (Director-General), The Department of International Trade Promotion Ministry of Commerce, Royal Thai Government, to discuss the show.

How long have you been with the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair?

Over 30 years. This year will be the 58th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Show. The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce has organized the show 2 times a year.

What are the dates for 2016/2017?

  • 58th BKK GEMS September 7-11, 2016
  • 59th BKK GEMS February 22-26, 2017
  • 60th BKK GEMS September 6-10, 2017

What is unique about your show?

Based on the new DITP working model, this event aims to set precedence for future gems and jewelry expos by enhancing the image of the exhibition, beginning with a new and highly secure contemporary layout, highlighting the latest fashion trends and cutting-edge designs, focus toward specific target groups such as seniors and men, all the way to pet lovers, charms and spiritual accessories not to mention jewelry for special occasions such as jewelry for weddings and Mother’s Day, etc., whilst providing an open forum for today’s most influential designers and master jewelers; with hopes to help a venue for all international gems and jewelry people in their industry.

What type of exhibitors/brands/merchandise are at the show?

The exhibitors are both international and domestic, representing manufacturers, designers as well as local artisans. Product groups include:  Amber, diamonds, pearls, precious metal, precious stones, rough stones, semiprecious stones, synthetics, costume jewelry, fashion jewelry, gold jewelry, silver jewelry, jewelry display & packaging, equipment & tools, jewelry parts, machinery, etc.

What type of clientele attends your shows?

We have a broad range of attendees, including Importers, Distributors, Sourcing Agents, Retailers, Designers and Showroom Owners. Statistically, the top 10 countries for where visitors come from are India, Myanmar, China, USA, Sri Lanka, Australia, Iran, Japan, Hong Kong and Pakistan.

What are some new and exciting changes to the shows?

This year we are putting an added focus on design from young designers and talented artisans.

There is a trend toward a larger share in the market for lifestyle products: men accessories and pet lovers.
