Eugene, OR—Will Leather Goods plans a step in the right direction this spring. The company, known for its artisan crafted bags and other accessories, is adding its first footwear offerings, namely a version of the traditional Mexican huarache sandal.
“What we are doing with these Huaraches is very special for our brand,” said William Adler, founder/creative director of Will Leather Goods. “As we have done in other parts of the world, we’re working with artisans in local communities in Mexico, ensuring our customers get an authentic product that is manufactured to exceed industry standards and specifications.”
Made in Mexico
For instance, Will’s huarache collection is hand-burnished with a horsehair wheel, employing a centuries-old technique to create them. Every pair is hand-woven from Italian vegetable leather and dyed with natural oils and waxes to achieve a rich color. Will’s burnishing process is done by hand, and each sandal is finished with an all-natural, double-layer rubber crepe sole. Men’s huaraches will be available in brown, black, grey and tan. Women’s Huaraches will be available in tan, black, grey, red, yellow/natural, and red/turquoise. Suggested retail is $185.
Will’s huarache collection is manufactured in Sahuayo, a small city in the western Mexican state of Michoacán, known for centuries for making the huarache and for its experience in leather weaving.
While the collection is now exclusively for sale at Will’s flagship store on Abbot Kinney in Venice, Calif., the huaraches will be available at other Will stores, retailers and at www.willleathergoods.com in April.
