Top 10 Footwear Trends at FN PLATFORM

In Breaking Trends, What's New, Footwear by Ann Loynd

We may be deep into the dog days of summer, but spring sprung at last week’s FN PLATFORM show in Vegas. In all honesty, the forecast for SS18 didn’t look radically different than this year’s climate, rather brands rolled out updates to silhouettes that performed well. Below, check out our top 10 footwear trends for Spring ’18.

Aerosoles

Bringing Texty Back: Shoes aren’t done making a statement, and this season, kitschy phrases take a female-empowerment angle (hello women’s march). Brands upped the ante from last season’s popular winks and peace signs with phrases like “Girl Power” and “Queen Bee.”

Ribbon Dance: Anyone who has worn this season’s popular ghillie-tie trend has to admit one thing—it isn’t comfortable. Thankfully, smart brands updated this trend for 2018 with ribbon ties, which can wrap around the calf in a much softer fashion than popular shoelace-esque styles. Bernardo (above) took the opportunity to add some personalization to this silhouette, offering consumers multiple ribbons that can be swapped in and out.

Bill Blass

Flower Power: Just when you thought the ’70s were on the way out, flower appliques blossomed all over the show floor. From large statements, like this Bill Blass style, to small appliques, Spring ’18 will be a garden of options.

Carrano

Pool Party: Last season, Rihanna’s Fenty Puma pool slide took fashion by storm, inspiring countless interpretations (and flat out knock-offs) of the now-ubiquitous silhouette. While the slide isn’t going away for Spring ’18, brands took a more sophisticated approach, utilizing slimmer lasts and upscale materials like metallic leather.

Island Escape: Need a vacation? Tropical motifs were present in nearly every line. From banana leaves to margaritas and pineapples to flamingos (also trending in bags in jewelry), Spring ’18 offers shoppers an island oasis.

Kat Maconie

Fringe Benefits: Oh, fringe, it has been a pleasure watching you grow up. From the Coachella-inspired leather fringe of last fall to Spring’s tassel explosion, this latest iteration features fanned-out threads that create sophisticated whimsy.

Kennel & Schmenger

Picnic Perfect: This classic pattern à la Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz exploded in women’s wear this summer, and footwear is fast to pick up on the trend. From all-over gingham to subtle accents (like this girly bow), we have a feeling this is going to be a favorite.

Pikolinos

Best Western: Saddle up! Western motifs continue to trend, and they’ve been adopted for spring in unexpected silhouettes, like this embroidered slide. Look for embroidery, studs and rivets on everything from flats to booties and heels.

Pollice Lee

Pretty in Pearls: Gucci started it, so naturally, everyone is on board. Pearls aren’t going anywhere in 2018, and the latest styles feature even bigger statements with this posh gem. We love the pearl buckle detail on this ankle strap heel by Pollice Lee.

Schutz

Good Jeans: Denim was a hot material this fall, and it’s getting a Spring update with distressed accents on sandals, sneakers and mules.
