After the overwhelming success of its “90s Forever” vintage pop-up this past May, NYC retailer Spark Pretty announces its first permanent brick-and-mortar location in the East Village. Celebrating its grand opening tonight, the store is a visual celebration of the neighborhood’s rock n’ roll history.
Picture “I Want My MTV” meets ’80s hair metal and a touch of ’70s glam rock. The store is a treasure trove of rare vintage finds, including crystal-encrusted, hand-painted Tony Alamo designer jean jackets, vintage ’70s bell-bottoms and ’80s studded skinny jeans. And of course, the selection will be stocked with ’90s finds—Kelly Bundy bandage dresses, vintage leather bomber jackets and pins, patches and shoes galore.
The dynamic duo behind the shop, Amanda Dolan and Meagan Colby, met while working at Betsy Johnson. Together, they’ve overhauled the East Village space by hand to create a unique vintage shopping experience that’s all about fun. “When looking back on any decade, you get a rush of that ‘warm fuzzy’ nostalgic season,” notes Dolan and Colby. “But what’s so fun about the ’90s, specifically, is that memory of saturated colors, excess glamour, goofy humor, pop culture icons and dynamic styling choices. It’s a decade that stands out like no other.”
Accessories of note, they say, include Lisa Frank lunch boxes, Vinyl Purses with working clocks, Bell Charm necklaces, Budweiser sneakers, sparking stilettos and Patrick Nagel totes. Additionally, hats and headpieces are hand painted by Spark Pretty’s in-house designer, Tom Knight.
“True Vintage has that one-of-a-kind vibe to it,” note Dolan and Colby. “Like the feeling of unearthing a buried treasure! With so much mass produced, fast-fashion out there, wearing vintage carries a special uniqueness.”
