What were the hottest accessories of 2017? A scroll through just a few of the bags, jewelry items, shoes, belts and more that set our Instagram feeds on fire.
GUCCI BELT BAG
Belt bags (do not call them fanny packs) have had a major resurgence, and we have Alessandro Michele to thank. Gucci’s daring creative director has spawned so many trends lately they’re hard to count, but the simple quilted belt bag might be the most wearable. Materials like velvet jazzed it up for the holiday season.

CULT GAIA ARK BAG
It’s fitting that the company that created this bag has cult in its name, as this instantly recognizable bag truly has a cult following. In fact, this summer, Fashionista declared in an article: “If there’s an Instagram style influencer that doesn’t own the Ark bag, we must not follow them.”‘
The photogenic bag is indeed an Instagram darling, resulting in waitlists of over 2,500 and sales tripling year over year. The bag started in bamboo and has been created in acrylic at a slightly higher retail. Not surprisingly, it’s been “emulated” by handbag brands the industry over, sparking a basket bag and structured wooden trend.
SAINT LAURENT RHINESTONE BOOTS
Not for the faint of heart, these crystal-encrusted, slouchy cone-heeled boots were an instant sensation when they strutted down St. Laurent’s FW17 runway in Paris. The originals, which are covered with 3,000 Swarovski crystals, had an instant wait list at retailers, and now sell for $10,000 on Net-a-Porter.
Rihanna scored a pair, and the post got 1.3 million likes. Not surprisingly, the style has since spawned numerous, and more affordable, imitations.
STATEMENT EARRINGS & CREATIVE HOOPS
This wasn’t about one single item, but rather about a major category. Again, it stems back to Instagram, because what accessory shows up best in a selfie? Bold earrings!
Hoops are so ubiquitous it’s almost hard to call them a trend, but designers got super creative this year mixing double hoops, triple hoops, front-facing hoops. The most interesting of them all? Big jangles of interlocking circles.
ILLESTEVA LEONARD MASK SUNGLASS
While sunglasses are often called “frames,” it seems the hottest styles have no frames at all. The laser-cut Leonard Mask style by indie brand Illesteva features a keyhole nose bridge and a tinted lens. The sunglasses are hand-made in family-run factories in Italy and France and designed in New York.
While still on the uptrend, teeny tiny sunglasses have appeared on the bridges of It girls everywhere. A definitive pendulum swing away from oversized frames that defined the earlier part of the decade.
