This summer, news that back-to-school spending would reach an all-time high came as a welcome respite to struggling retailers. If you have yet to see the proof, never fear, the best is yet to come. New data from Sociomantic Labs (a programmatic ad solution that helps marketers reach consumers based on real-time and first-party data) reveals that back-to-school spending will peak in August.

With August officially upon us, Sociomantic says now is the time to put last-minute marketing dollars into online advertising focused on desktop. Here are some of the key takeaways from consumer behavior in 2016:

Data shows that both retail revenue and media ad spend is much higher in August compared to June and July

  • 48% of all retail revenue came from August
  • 47% of all media dollars were spent in August, when looking at June through August time frame

Average order value on accessories/fashion product increases significantly in August as compared to June and July

  • June: $102.34
  • July: $104.40
  • Aug: $121.43

Data shows that most shoppers spend on desktop over mobile, and most revenue came from desktop sales

  • From June 2016 through August 2016, 73% of all revenue came from desktop
  • From June 2016 through August 2016, 75% of all media spend was in desktop while 25% was in mobile
