ShopperTrak: Last-Minute Shoppers a Gift to Retailers

Holiday ShoppingChicago–While retailers experienced a healthy bump up in their sales ending Super Saturday, Dec. 22, total retail sales fell 2.5% compared to 2011, according to ShopperTrak, which monitors retail traffic across the country.

“It was a good finish as last-minute shoppers got off the couch,” said Bill Martin, ShopperTrak founder on Thursday afternoon. “Retailers got a nice rise in sales over the previous week.”

Last-minute shoppers headed to stores in droves during the week before Christmas, driving up foot traffic 32% and retail sales 39.1%, ShopperTrak reported.

“Compared to the same time last year, though, it’s a bit off,” Martin said. “Sales declined 2.5% and there was a 3.3% decline in foot traffic.”

Still, Super Saturday was the second busiest retail sales and foot traffic day of the year, after Black Friday. Martin said. Dec. 21 was the fourth busiest sales and traffic day of the year.

Analysts have yet to receive sales tallies from Dec. 23 and 24, both key shopping days. The hope is that these last minute shoppers–not to mention post-Christmas bargain hunters–will help bolster total holiday sales.

Last week, ShopperTrak lowered its holiday sales forecast as did other analysts who had previously predicted more robust retail sales this year.
