Online Holiday Shopping Rises, Even on Christmas Day

Costa Mesa, CA–Although holiday shopping totals are expected to be less than stellar this year, online sales continue to increase and set new records. The latest? Christmas Day, Dec. 25, had a 27% jump in online traffic, according to Experian Marketing Services.

A total of 115.5 million consumers visited a range of 500 top websites though Amazon topped the list with nearly 25 million visitors to its site. Walmart, Target, BestBuy and Macy’s are among the top five most visited sites on Christmas Day.

Most of the Christmas Day searches, however, were for tech gifts, Experian reported with tablet computers topping the most searched-for merchandise.

During the seven weeks leading up to Christmas, Experian said online retail traffic was up 10% from 2011 with each major shopping holiday reporting increases: Thanksgiving had a 6% increase; Black Friday had a 7% jump, and Cyber Monday was up 11%.

Amazon has consistently ranked as the top most popular website during the holiday season, Experian said.
