Olsens Bow First Handbag Line at Barneys

New York—Those irrepressible twin sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, are at it again. Both have their hands on several successful fashion collections, including their upscale The Row. Now the pair is adding handbags to the growing list of business credits.

Designer Doubles

The collection, which premiered this week on Barneys website and available in stores in August, consists of nine styles such as  a day tote, backpack, doctor bag, shoulder bag, minaudiere and laptop bag in leathers such as calf and alligator. Or as Barneys describes them:  “sleek and sophisticated, blending old-world glamour with contemporary chic — a rare balance that has come to define The Row, season after season.” Retail prices are unavailable at press time.

To honor the Olsens at their handbag debut, Barneys asked the twins to interview each other about their style point of views and published them on the store’s blogsite. For instance, when Mary-Kate asks Ashley what’s the best city for fashion, Ashley responds—with a plug: “I don’t believe you can say any city is the best city for fashion. We started The Row in L.A., we are now based in New York, and we are about to open our first permanent showroom in Paris. We also have extremely important retail partners in London and Tokyo. They are all important fashion cities in their own right.”

Answering Ashley’s questions about her favorite designers, Mary-Kate answers: “John Galliano, Yohji Yamamoto. They have and continue to redefine fashion.”

The Olsens have been dispensing fashion advice on their recently launched website, StyleMint.com, a subscription T-shirt line only web and a social shopping site that creates new styles based on shopper’s profile and personal style.

The shirts will be designed by “the dynamic duo,” who will personally style and send fans a new T-shirt for only $29.99 a month.

According to Forbes, the Olsens, now 25, have capitalized on their fame to the tune of some $1 billion in retail sales a year. That, of course, includes Dualstar, teen-oriented merchandise sold at Walmart and other retailers.
