Grab those highlighters! Neon yellow-green hues have swept the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 runways, evoking glowing Lite-Brite pegs and adding a touch of optimism and fun. While neon has long worked for street and athletic-wear, what’s new is how it’s now showing up on everything from gowns, ruched dresses and dramatic wraps to plastic shoes and leather handbags.
The hue certainly evokes the 80s, but it also looks entirely fresh for 2019.
Neon makes quite the dramatic entrance, as illustrated by this ruffled neon cape at Naeem Khan’s show.
Neon accessories have been shown to coordinate with neon ready-to-wear, either in a head-to-toe look, or something less obvious, like a neon sleeve peeking out from a plaid suit with neon accents.
At Alice + Olivia, neon went from head to toe in the form of neon flower button earrings down to neon pumps and strappy sandals. Neon jackets, pants and dresses had black zippers, trim and buttons for contrast. Veronica Beard showed neon as a simple ruched dress.
NEON AS STREETWEAR
Expect to see neon show up in streetwear, from neon sweatshirts to patches and camouflage accents, often paired with bright orange. Designer Jeremy Scott used neon in various incarnations, right down to neon touches on white moto boots. A coat in transparent plastic neon adds a futuristic feel.
