The maximal nature of fashion week is intended to shock, awe and inspire. But, does it actually sell the clothes? For German designer Marcel Ostertag, who debuted his SS18 collection at NYFW last week, that’s the goal. “We are always fast-forward. We are fashionable, but we think about the commercial side,” he tells Accessories. “We want to really sell the stuff to real people in the end, not just to supermodels.”
That ethos is at the core of Ostertag’s collaboration with fellow European brand, Tamaris shoes. The capsule collection, Marcel Ostertag x Tamaris, includes more than 25 styles debuting across 28 countries (they’re not available in the U.S. yet, but we’ll cross our fingers). The shoes are designed with extra padding that the designer describes as “walking on clouds,” making the fashion-forward designs extremely wearable, just like the apparel. “It’s important when you design something like a pair of shoes to keep in mind that it should be sexy, but comfortable enough to wear for hours,” he adds. “You can dance the whole night in our high heels.”
Ostertag also accessorized his collection with an exclusive earring design, large statement Peace Signs lasered with the designer’s eponymous brand name. “It’s fun!” he adds. “They’re for young and older people who are just outgoing.” Another statement accessory was Ostertag’s signature belt design, featuring an athletic elastic band and “ruck-sack” buckle accented with rose gold and rubber.
“It adds something really sporty to the high-fashion glamour thing,” he says. “I really like it when you just break something.”
