NRF offering $25,000 for Best Retail Stories

Washington—Do you have one of the best retail stories in America? No, that’s not a typo, we do mean stories, not stores, although the two need not be mutually exclusive!

The National Retail Federation (NRF) is inviting retailers to create and submit two-minute videos about their stores with the opportunity to win $25,000. The contest is part of the multi-faceted Retail Means Jobs campaign, which aims to raise awareness of retail’s significant impact on America.

According to the NRF, with more than 3.6 million retail establishments supporting one in four U.S. jobs, or 42 million working Americans, retail contributes $2.5 trillion to the country’s annual GDP. To that end, retail is a daily barometer for the nation’s economy.

To celebrate the industry and inspire everyone in retail, the NRF is on a hunt “to find the best retail stories in America–from marketing geniuses to customer service superstars to small business owners, who are the fabric of every local community,” said Matthew Shay, NRF’s president/ceo. “NRF’s This is Retail contest will put a face on an industry that is seamlessly woven into the fabric of America and influences every aspect of our life and culture, from commerce and fashion to real estate and public policy.”

What should the story contain? Each two minute video, submitted by retail employees or business owners, should share a retail story, highlighting how the company impacts shoppers or the community, their role in the creation of a new innovative product or technology, or how an initiative will generate new jobs.

Contest Timeline

March 5 – 16: Video submissions accepted
April 2: A panel of retail executives select the Top 20 videos
April 3 – April 8: The finalists will be featured on the site and voting begins. Ten matchups for the Top 20 videos
April 9: Top 10 videos announced
April 10 – April 15: Voting on five matchups for the Top 10 videos
April 16: Top 5 videos announced
April 17 – April 22: All five videos compete for voting to win the top prize
May 1: Top three finalists announced
May 16: Ranking of the top three videos announced and prizes awarded in Washington, D.C. at NRF’s Washington Leadership Conference in May.

The first place winner will receive $25,000, second place will receive $15,000, and third place will receive $10,000.
