NPD: U.S. Apparel Sales Rose 2% in 2013

Port Washington, NY–Total U.S. apparel sales edged up in 2013 helped by growth in particular women’s categories. According to The NPD Group, Inc., a global information company, 2013 U.S. retail sales for apparel increased 2% in both dollar and unit sales to $201.2 billion from $197.2 billion in 2012. Total dollar sales in women’s apparel were up 1% to $111.5 billion.

The top five best-selling categories (based on dollars) were knit shirts, jeans, woven shirts, pants, and dresses. Combined, these categories generated $99.45 billion in sales, with woven shirts experiencing an increase of 9%, the largest growth within the top five.

“Much of the growth in woven shirts is being driven by the women’s and kids’ segments,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD. “Other contributing factors to the category’s success can be attributed to the increasing number of options such as peplum and the resurgence of denim shirts, which have added more choices to the category for consumers.”
