Nicole Miller for Indego Bracelets

Kigali, Rwanda–Nicole Miller has always had a love of vibrant prints, and now she’s putting her visual eye to good use in a recent Fair Trade collaboration to help artisans in Rwanda, Africa.

A design collaboration with Fair Trade co-op Indego Africa has produced some stellar accessories that will help provide jobs and money to female artisans in Rwanda.

The fabric-covered bangles are designed with the Cooperative de Couture de Kicukiro (known as “Cocoki”), a sewing cooperative of more than 40 remarkable women in Kigali, Rwanda, while the woven bracelets (not shown) are made in partnership with Covanva, a cooperative of 43 expert weavers in Nyamata, Rwanda.

The collection even won the Fair Trade Federation’s 2011 Award for Excellence in Product Design. “Indego Africa stood out among the 10 nominees,” explained Mary Rose Parrish, the Fair Trade Federation’s program manager. “Their hip, innovative design and responsible use of materials have resulted in a great product that both speaks to consumers and creates a tremendous impact on artisans’ lives.”

The bangles are sold as trio sets on, retailing for $25.

The Nicole Miller bangles include a hang-tag personally signed by the artisan who created them, with links to discover photos, bios and more information about them online.
