London—While the Duchess of Cambridge’s growing baby bump seems to make headlines daily, it is Kate Middleton’s fondness for small things—namely small clutch handbags—that have British fashionistas clucking.

Why it seems to some that the larger the Duchess’ tummy gets, the smaller her handbags have become.

“If she’s done anything for the handbag, it’s the fact that she wears small clutch bags,” designer Lulu Guinness told British tabloids are the recent opening party at the Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design.

Indeed, while the Duchess was once photographed carrying a Mulberry Polly satchel and a Tod’s D tote, in recent months she has favored small envelope style clutches or frame clutches such as Anya Hinmarch’s fan clutch, Jimmy Choo’s Ubai clutch, LK Bennett clutch and many from her favorite, Wilbur & Gussie.

So will Kate, whose fondness for nude pumps, sapphire engagement rings and nude sheer pantyhose stirred styles, now incite a trend toward tinier handbags, too?

“Personally, I am making my clutch bags smaller next season, so they’re more delicate and ladylike, and that’s to do with her, I think,” Guinness said.

While some of her clutches leave barely enough room to squeeze in an iPhone, let’s face it, the Duchess doesn’t have to worry about carrying too much around thanks to her palace entourage.

“She’s very elegant, but she’s also got people carrying the other things she needs, and a big car waiting for her,” Guinness added.

Besides, what’s to stop women from carrying their Kate-sized clutches almost as wallets, storing them in their larger totes and satchels, and later removing them later for evening or special occasions?

Her “grandmother-in-law” Queen Elizabeth II has always had a fondness for top handle bags which she has carried for decades, befuddling palace watchers who wonder what in the world Her Majesty could bother to tote around.

Evidently, according to reports, the Queen has practical reasons for her roomier top handle bags: they carry around lozenges, fountain pens, reading glasses and lipstick.
