Jones Group to Acquire Brian Atwood, Plans Global Expansion

New York—The Jones Group once again is expanding its scope in footwear. The company, which owns Nine West and Stuart Weitzman, announced today that it would be acquiring the Brian Atwood brand, too.

While the financial terms of the deal were undisclosed, Jones Group said that the takeover would include “existing and future collections, inclusive of his luxury shoe collections.” The acquisition “furthers Jones’ strategy of acquiring and nurturing creative talents and designer brands.”

Designer Brian Atwood will retain an ownership stake in his brand and continue as creative director and designer “with broad responsibilities over all aspects of the brand’s creative direction and image.” Under the terms of the agreement, Jones and Brian Atwood will form a joint venture, which will own the intellectual property rights of the Brian Atwood brand and existing licenses. Jones will own a majority stake.

‘Accelerate’ Expansion into Other Categories

The announcement following the August 2011 launch of B Brian Atwood, a contemporary footwear collection that Jones produced under a license agreement.

Atwood founded his brand in 2001 and has since become a favorite with celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga. Brian Atwood footwear is sold at Neiman Marcus,Saks Fifth Avenue, Intermix, Net-a-Porter and Jeffrey, as well as high-end boutiques worldwide.

With the new joint venture Jones Group said it plans to “accelerate the development of Brian Atwood as a global luxury brand, supporting the expansion of his design vision to other categories.”

“The Jones Group is an exceptional partner,” said Atwood. “I am excited to enter into a deeper partnership with Jones, which has both the business acumen and brand expertise that will help me realize my dream of a fully developed Brian Atwood brand. I look forward to the next chapter—that includes several significant milestones of retail and marketing firsts for my brand.”

Atwood received the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s Swarovski Perry Ellis Award for Accessory Design in 2003.
