New York—A drawing of a nymph crouching among bamboo shoots got one talented New York Academy of Art alumni a once in a lifetime trip to the studios of jeweler John Hardy in Bali.

Taehun Lee, the artist and 2009 MFA graduate, won the trip and the opportunity to see first hand how her design will be incorporated into the back grill work on one of John Hardy’s signature bracelets.

Lee was announced the winner of the competition last week at the Tribeca Ball, which benefits the New York Academy of Art. John Hardy was the underwriter for the star-studded event, held on Franklin Street where the party spanned five floors of open studios containing the work of more than 100 artists.

Mindy Grimes, president of John Hardy, and Guy Bedarida, presented the award to Lee whose design for the grill work best reflected the jeweler’s core values. A pioneer in sustainability, John Hardy uses recycled silver in its production and instituted planting acres of bamboo forests in Bali. Due to its longstanding tradition of collaborating with true artists, John Hardy executives said the Academy, which holds similar core values, made for a perfect partner.

In addition to the trip, Lee will receive a Flip video recorder so she can share her experience with friends around the world via social media.
