Milan–Oh Betty, what would Don say?
Known as Betty Draper on the 60s era ad world of “Mad Men,” actress January Jones has stepped into today’s ad world as well. But while she’s known for her prim dresses and aprons on the show, Versace spring 2011 ads may be known for what she isn’t wearing.
Fans of the series are surely getting a kick out of this. Remember when Don forced Betty to quit her aspirations of reviving her modeling career and essentially sent her back to the kitchen? Guess who’s getting the last laugh now?
Posing absolutely nude except for a strategically positioned Versace handbag, Jones shows herself in an a racy, contemporary way. In another shot, which is a beauty shot, she’s wearing just sunglasses. The ads were shot by London-based photographer Mario Testino and are in moody black and white, evoking an Old Hollywood glamour.
Remarked Donatella Versace: “I’m always on the lookout for the next Versace blonde…and in January I feel I have found a perfect Versace woman for the 21st century. She is chic and elegant but deeply sensual too–it is a dramatic combination.”
The collaboration between Jones and Versace isn’t all that surprising, considering the blonde bombshell stunned on the recent Emmy Red Carpet in a blue Versace gown.
The Versace campaign follows another actress-sans-clothes-with-strategically-placed-handbag campaign that Bulgari launched last fall featuring Julianne Moore.
Last August, the mayor of Venice demanded that Bulgari replace an “inappropriate” image of Moore, a Pochette handbag and two lions cubs (and little else) from a billboard that was displayed in St. Mark’s Square.
