Jane Austen has done it again, this time pairing up with filmmaker Whit Stillman (“Metropolitan,” “Last Days of Disco”) for an 18th Century period piece that feels modern in its writing.

Adapted from Austen’s “Lady Susan,” even if it wasn’t published until a century after her death, the movie circles back to 1780, when manners were everything and marrying for money was expected. The acid-tongued quips of Kate Beckinsale’s Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale),
