Inspired by the infamous beatnik jeweler, Sam Kramer, Lee Elliot has been hand-crafting jewelry since the age of 16. With an 800-square-foot shop in Sag Harbor hosting both he and his daughter Dori’s designs, Elliot continues to be an influential force in the hand-crafted jewelry market at the age of 69.
Born with a disability of the right hand, Elliot nevertheless pursued artistic practices from a young age. Having moved to Manhattan as a teenager, the jeweler got his start with hand-crafted goods working as a leather sandal in the 1960s. At the same time, Elliot discovered the immense artistry involved in hand-carving wax castings, falling in love with the practice and eventually building a make-shift studio within his own home.
Several Southampton storefronts later, the artist now resides in Sag Harbor where he continues to brandish his infamous hammered chains and disc pendants alongside his daughter at their shared storefront studio. While the jeweler doesn’t plan on retiring soon, Elliot balances his work with philanthropic endeavors, supporting The Retreat of East Hampton for the prevention of domestic violence and giving talks at local schools, inspiring children to work past their differences and disabilities in careers and in life.
