Pink is a particularly hot color for Derby today in honor of the 141th Kentucky Oaks (when the female horses run and they donate money to breast cancer via Bright Pink and Horses & Hope).
Main style rule? Be bold!
“Derby is all about ‘go big or go home,'” says Denise Woods, national accounts manager of Giovannio Hats. “The bigger the brim, the better–like this style, which has an 8-inch brim. And brighter is definitely better down South, although we do sell a ton of nude/champagne hats for women who will then personalize them with colored feathers and trim to match their outfits.”
Woods notes that in England, it’s all about height, which is why fans sport outrageous fascinators at the Ascot races, but at Kentucky Derby, it’s all about huge brims. “There’s nothing subtle about Derby.”
