It seems particularly appropriate that fashion entrepreneurs Sheila Nazarian and Laura Darrah have referred to one of their mini-satchels in their new she + lo brand as “Rise Again.” For surely, the veteran handbag duo have done just that.
Nearly a decade ago, Darrah and Nazarian met as bridesmaids at a mutual friend’s wedding, and they immediately bonded over their love of fashion—specifically, handbags. That love led them to create Treesje, a line of luxury handbags that infused-California cool with New York chic. Their bags were lapped up by “sophisticated consumers,” and celebrities including Katy Perry, Fergie, Blake Lively, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Klum. After six years of building Treesje, they got an offer in 2011 and sold the company. They partnered again on Joelle Hawkens, which focused on quality bags at a more accessible price point.
Now they launched their first namesake company, she + lo, based on their partners’ nicknames. Initial plans call for a focus on handbags (retails $98 to $398) but with a goal of expanding it into a broader lifestyle brand with jewelry, shoes and possibly even ready-to-wear.
As has been characteristic of their work, she + lo has an urban West Coast vibe that appeals to women across the continent.
Many of the bags are convertible, such as those with a longer detachable strap that allows a satchel, for example, to be worn long as a hobo or cross-body.
From the Fall 2014 collection, the Rise Above satchel features gray, one of the collection’s anchor colors consisting of black, gray and taupe with on-trend hues like hunter green and rose pink. She + lo introduces some new leathers and styles, from beveled lamb to opaque foils, and its custom-designed hardware includes matte black studs and clasps.
There’s always going to be “something extra” the entrepreneurs vow.
