Granted it’s a far cry from the 18K yellow gold and diamond headband that Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o wore Sunday night to the Oscars, but it’s Mardi Gras, the holiday that revelers let loose on.

And if you’re going to play the part—lots of beaded necklaces, masks etc., you might as well thrown on a coordinating purple, green and gold (official Mardi Gras colors) on your hair as well. Century Novelty, which specializes in all things Mardi Gras, utilizes the traditional colors in its headband (purple stands for justice, green for faith and gold for power btw).

Celebrations of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday/Shrove Tuesday, date back to Medieval Europe but has evolved to incorporate “French celebrations, African music and the masquerade tradition,” says Karen Leathem, museum historian for the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans, which is Ground Zero for today’s celebrations.

Leathem says an important part of the celebration is to don masks, hats, jewelry etc. and other accessories suitable for kicking up your heels. We’re all for wearing accessories, not matter what the reason.
