Having grown up in a musical household (she’s the daughter of Art Neville and the niece of Aaron Neville of The Neville Brothers…maybe you saw them at New Orleans JazzFest this past weekend?), Arthel Neville knows that words matter. She’s also a news anchor at Fox News network, so she’s used to getting her message out there with words.

Neville has a new message medium these days: handbags.

“My dad used to say: ‘Words are like bullets; once they’re out you can’t take them back,'” says Neville. “Words are important. Words matter. The bags all feature my original quotes meant to inspire, motivate, affirm and invigorate women of all ages,” says Neville. The line features seven original quotes, with more to come.

“They’re kind of like ‘mood’ bags. For example “YOU CAN’T ERASE ME” might attract you for one reason when you first read it. And yet, six months later that same phrase might resonate with you on another level depending on what’s going on in your life at the moment.”

And since the bags are meant to inspire all women, Neville kept them within reach, pricewise. The bags are textured vegan/faux leather and retail from $32 to $75.

“Many mentees, friends and acquaintances often come to me for ‘words of wisdom’ and advice,” says Neville, pointing out that she often speaks in metaphors and made-up or coined phrases to punctuate her point. “I do this mainly when giving sisterly advice. I began to write down my sayings and share them from time-to-time.  I also happen to love fashion and this gives me a way to combine the two.”

Quotes often mix fashion, glamour and empowerment, such as: “Glamorous, Gifted, Grateful,” “Who Said I Couldn’t Do It?” “Grab a Glass of Wine and Call Your Best Girlfriend!” “Pumps, Flats, Sneakers, I Blaze Trails in All Types of Shoes.”

Neville also ships each bag with a card inside explaining why she wrote each quote.

Above, the explanation for Erase, which Neville adds also resonates as a quote for survivors. Neville hopes that her bags cause strangers to engage with each other after reading the messages. “I want my bags to become a fun and easy way to start a conversation with friends or even people in the grocery store line who might happen to ask you about the quote on your bag!”

Neville is also working as a songwriter behind the scenes for other musicians, so there are a lot of words swirling around in her head. Stay tuned for more!
