AlkemieItem of the Day: Alkemie

Husband-wife design duo Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson call their Topanga Canyon, California-based jewelry company Alkemie, after the phonetic spelling of “alchemy.”

And no wonder. Alchemy is defined as “the art of transforming something common into something precious.”

And that’s just what happens at Alkemie. The duo handmake each piece of jewelry using 100% reclaimed metals that have been hand-cast through a lost wax process—basically turning what was landfill bound into a tiny treasure.

That treasure chest look is achieved by the patina each piece is finished with—like this zodiac coin that features astrologic symbols on a 2-inch by 2.5 inch pendant.

While these modern day alchemists don’t claim to turn base metals into noble metals, their resulting creations are pure gold.

Retail: $264 (available in a gold or silver patina)
