At the risk of being a “nag,” we have to remind you how important horses, equestrian motifs and the like will be this year. For tomorrow marks the first day of the Chinese (or Lunar) New Year, which will be known as the Year of the Horse.

To commemorate the event—as well as the other signs in the Chinese zodiac, Boston-based designer Jenne Rayburn fashioned these handcrafted horse earrings from thin metal that’s been hammered and textured yet remain lightweight.

Those born in 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, and now 2014, are born under the sign of the horse, Rayburn notes. “This is the year of the wood horse adding attributes of stability and strength to those born in this year. Horse people tend to be smart, sophisticated and talented. They pride themselves on being independent and do not like to be restrained. On the negative side, they tend to be impatient, rarely take advice from others and often have bouts of bad temper.”

Besides appealing to our romantic sides, horses played a key role in advancing civilization, literally helping our ancestors gallop across new lands.

“We would not be where we are today without the horse,” Rayburn adds.  How true.

Oh and Happy New Year!
