Ipanema makes a splash at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim

Cocktails and the menu

This year, my partner and I attend less shows in favor of more private accommodations by designers (as the Mikoh dinner we discussed last week). Ipanema’s, who is one of the official sponsors of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim, cocktail reception did not disappoint with a selection of cool drinks, hor d’oeuvres, and best of all an intimate sit-down with the designer of the brand himself.

The conversation was full of collaborations missed, the hardships of getting an international brand in the US market and his own personal feelings about where he wants his brand to be in the future. The name alone, Ipanema, screams foreign locations since Ipanema is a neighborhood located in the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Leblon and Arpoador.

However, we can’t help notice that the love of flip flops have not only become a trend but that high end designers are featuring a pair of these once beach stables now on shore in their shoe lines.  We like GUESS, Marc Jacob and Micheal Kors but their designs are always the same, logo on thongs and color or print where no one can seem them at roughly 50 dollars and up. Ipanema has a definite chance to enter the flip flop (or cyber-sandals) market because they offer  something different.

We looked at all the shoes on display and couldn’t find one that looked similar to the other, from fused braided thongs to large pyramid studs, these flip flops were offering a bridge between sandals and flip flops that just didn’t exist before. They can actually come off the beach into brunch and not be painfully obvious (they don’t make the sound that flip flops are named). The price is reasonable as well starting at 20 dollars.

After the cocktail was over, we were gifted with a pair of shoes and various promotional products from the brand. We had to try them on once we got home and found that the flip flop was concave in the middle allowing the shoe to hug your feet which eliminated the thong pressure between the toes we get with more conventional flip flop design. Since fashion week has closed, I have worn these shoes 5 times which is a record for me (I love shoes and have over 50 pairs) plus I was lucky enough to get the pyramid stud ones.

The brand also gave away limited edition flip flops made especially for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim in their outside booth. Those flip flops are going to be souvenirs.
