ICSC: Last Minute Shoppers Boost Holiday Totals

New York—Although there may have been a lull in early Decembers, holiday shoppers returned to stores the week before Christmas, giving a much needed lift to holiday sales.

According to the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)/Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index released today,  comparable store sales  rose 0.9% for the week ended Dec. 24.  compared with the previous wee. That’s 4.5% higher than the  same period a year ago.

ICSC expects that holiday sales beginning in November to be in line with its estimate for a 3.5% total sales increase this year.
