Holiday Update: Most Free Shipping Offers to End Friday

Free ShippingWashington–Free shipping has been one of retailer’s favorite ammunition to get consumers’ attention and purchase especially online. But as the final stretch before Christmas comes to a close, so do most of those free shipping offers.

Nearly three quarters (74.2%) of retailers reported that their free standard shipping promotions will expire by Dec. 20, according to’s eHoliday survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

Also worth of note—especially in a year with an abundance of procrastinators—84.2% of retailers said their standard shipping deadline for guaranteed Christmas delivery will expire prior to Friday, too.

There’s Always Express 2-Day Shipping

“With Christmas falling on a Wednesday this year, we expect to see numerous offers from retailers for expedited and express shipping as we head into the final stretch and potentially biggest weekend of the holiday season,” said Executive Director Vicki Cantrell. “Companies know how important shipping offers are to their customers, many of whom will keep an eye out in the coming days as their favorite retailers are likely to up the shipping ante.”

For those waiting until the last minute, half (50.0%) of companies that will offer a free or upgraded expedited shipping promotion say their customers will have at least until Saturday, Dec. 21 to take advantage of the offer. Nearly two in five (19.4%) retailers will let their customers take advantage of that offer through Sunday, Dec. 22, and 16.7% will go as late as Monday, Dec. 23.

For those that need to get gifts shipped across country, 73.5% of retailers will offer express two-day shipping as late as Saturday, Dec. 21 for a guaranteed Christmas delivery, and another 26.5% will let procrastinators ship as late as Sunday, Dec. 22. Nearly half (47.2%), however, say they are comfortable offering express one-day or overnight shipping as late as Monday, Dec. 23 for a guaranteed Christmas delivery.

The eHoliday Study provides an authoritative snapshot of the holiday activities of both large and small online retailers, and also includes the sentiments of online holiday shoppers. The study, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics for, surveyed 47 online retailers from June 10 to 27 and 44 retailers Sept. 4 to 23.
