BootsSpringfield, MA–What do women want for this holiday season? Shoes, apparently. And what kind? Boots!

This just in from If The Shoe Doesn’t Fit’s 2010 “Shoes and the Holiday Season” survey, conducted by The survey asked 450 female consumers aged 18 to 54 about their shoe shopping habits and desires this upcoming holiday season.

Apparently, boots gave designer high heels the uh, “boot.” Despite all the buzz about designer heels, only 8% of women surveyed chose that as their pick for a footwear gift. Of the others, 55% chose boots, 17% chose sandals (probably also hoping for a holiday getaway plane tickets too, no doubt). And 11% chose pumps.

While the survey did not ask the reason for their selections, Ellen Simes of If The Shoe Doesn’t Fit (an online auction site for new and used shoes) commented: “I’d say that although women love designer shoes, the economy and the retail price points of them were probably a factor in their selection. This is exactly the niche our auction site fills; we have sellers offering designer shoes at affordable prices.”

The survey also asked women about their planned shopping intentions this holiday season. Of the respondents, 45% said they plan to shop for shoes for themselves. When asked where they’d be shopping and given the opportunity to select multiple locales: 67% said they planned to shop at a local outlet of a chain store (such as DSW or Famous Footwear), while 60.5% planned to shop at an independent retail shoe store. Other answers were: Online shoe retailer such as Zappos or Shoebuy—31.7%; Online auction site such as Ebay or If The Shoe Doesn’t Fit—9.3%; or Online classifies such as Craigs List or Note: Department stores were not listed in the multiple choice questioning.
