Nicolas Ghesquière: Louis Vuitton’s next creative director?

Paris—No wonder the international fashion community wants this so bad: it seems like the perfect matchup—rising star and former Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquière being installed as creative director at Louis Vuitton.

Ghesquière, who left Balenciaga last November after 17 years, has been touted as the successor to replace Marc Jacobs even before Jacobs and LVMH, Vuitton’s owner, officially announced his departure earlier this month.

But according to a comment today from an LVMH spokesperson: “Nothing has been decided.”

That despite “confirmed reports” from unnamed insiders who basically say that Ghesquière will continue the legacy that Jacobs started and his experience building Balenciaga’s accessories business would serve Louis Vuitton well.

One glitch in the process, however, could be the dispute Ghesquière reportedly is enmeshed in with his former employer, Kering, which owns Balenciaga. The luxurygoods conglomerate is supposedly suing the designer for breach of contract, asking 7 million euros in damages.

Jacobs presented his final show for Louis Vuitton on Oct. 2 at Paris Fashion Week and then alongside partner Robert Duffy and LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault, he announced his departure to tend over his own namesake company which will likely be seeking an IPO eventually. LVMH also holds a majority stake in Marc Jacobs brand.
