FIT to Salute Belk at Benefit Gala

BelkNew York–Belk, a third-generation family-owned retailer and the nation’s largest privately owned department store group, is soon to be rewarded for keeping it in the family.

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and FIT’s Educational Foundation for the Fashion Industries will honor Thomas M. “Tim” Belk, Jr., chairman and ceo of Belk Inc., and John R. “Johnny” Belk, president and coo of Belk, Inc., at the college’s annual benefit gala. The event will be held May 11 at Cipriani in New York.

“This is a true success story, and the Belk family’s exceptional business standards are a model for every FIT student,” says FIT’s president Joyce Brown.

The event will also celebrate Belk’s new corporate identity, which was launched last October with a new logo, color palette, and tagline—”Modern. Southern. Style.”

FIT Students to Compete on Looks for Belk’s Spring 2012

“Our new brand clearly communicates what our company is today and what we aspire to be in the future,” said Tim Belk. “While we will continue to meet the needs of our traditional and classic customers, we are changing our brand and expanding our assortments to attract new customers who are looking for modern, updated brands and styles. Our vision is for the ‘modern, Southern woman to count on Belk first—for her, for her family, for life.’”

As an added bonus for the evening, guests will get a glimpse at some student designs. Prior to the event, FIT Fashion Design students were challenged to design sportswear and special occasion looks for Spring 2012, inspired by the colors and tagline of the new Belk brand. Sketches and mood boards from the selected four finalists (selected earlier by a panel of Belk judges) will be on display throughout the events, and guests will have the opportunity to vote for the winner in the special-occasion category.

Belk judges will select the sportswear category winner. The winning sportswear design will created and sold in Belk stores next spring, and each of the two winners will receive $2,500.

The annual gala benefits FIT’s Educational Development Fund, which assists the college with scholarships, technology, and student services, among other priorities.

During the dinner, FIT President Joyce F. Brown will welcome the honorees and guests. Bruce Rockowitz, president, Li & Fung (Trading) Ltd., the principal operating subsidiary of the Li & Fung group, will present the awards. Musicians Joe Firstman and Mark Bryan from Hootie and the Blowfish will entertain.
