FashioNXT 2015 Examines What’s Next in Fashion Tech

fashionnextPortland, OR–FashioNXT 2015 plans to continue to be the leading showcase of “future of fashion,”as it takes its fashion technology programs to the next level, in cooperation with the industry leaders such as Intel, Nike, Google and Manufacture New York.

The event opens today through Saturday in a tent situated in Portland’s Pearl District. The production puts Portland on the world stage with local, national and international fashion designers and the innovation of wearable technology, while leading development of Portland’s fashion eco-system. FashioNXT innovation in creating the experience of “what’s next” comes to center stage in the Wearable Technology Fashion competition.

“Studies have shown that most wearables do not have longevity in terms of user engagement. Aesthetics need to be the primary consideration for wearables,” said Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman, Adjunct Associate Professor at Pratt Institute and Founder and Director of the Intelligent Materials Applied Research & Innovation (IMARI) Lab, whose program produced the winner of the inaugural 2014 competition. “Unleashing the imagination is my key reason to encourage my students to enter into this vision competition.”

The international publicity of FashioNXT Wearable Technology Fashion competition prompted entries from 11 countries around the world, including Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Judges and mentors are technology leaders from Intel and Google, Nike, Stanford University, and Manufacture NY, and fashion designer Seth Aaron.

Angela Pan, founder/ceo Ashley Chloe Inc., which created the fashionable Helix Cuff, said, “We wanted to bridge the gap between high-fashion and functional design in the tech space, and we wanted to create something unique for fashionistas and music lovers–something that consumers can also show off a bit.”

“Most fashion consumers don’t want to wear bulky, glaring pieces of technology that lack design,” said Mark Francis, Venture lead for the new business initiative at Intel, and a judge and mentor for FashioNXT Wearable Technology Fashion competition. “Google Glass and many of the initial generation of smart-watches suffered this fate. Technology companies are realizing this and are now partnering with leading designers, fashion houses, and others who come from more of the consumer fashion side. This competition connects the new generation of designers with the industry leaders,” said Francis.

The 2015 Wearable Technology Fashion competition concludes Oct. 9 at FashioNXT, when the finalists will be presented. FashioNXT will also display the 3D printed Molecule Shoes from the Francis Bitonti Studio in New York.
