Years ago while studying in Europe, I told a guy I was from New York. “Are you a 212 or a 718?” he asked smoothly. Color me impressed. Here was a guy who knew his way around a NYC area code (this was way before the 917’s and 646’s came in and ruined everything).

Today, he wouldn’t have needed to ask. Women are wearing their area codes, zip codes and cities proudly, although they still have to divulge further. If I say I live “Uptown,” people aren’t satisfied until they hear “Upper West” or “Upper East.” And it’s no longer enough to say you’re from Brooklyn, now you must clarify if you’re from Williamsburg or Fort Greene; Park Slope or Prospect Park.

Here, some customizable items to help you to silently spell it out.

A bit more abstract, the BKLYN bracelet by BG Art Jewelry still gives proper credit to the borough.
