Coach has chosen a very special mascot to celebrate its 75th anniversary: Mickey Mouse. In this limited-edition collaboration with Disney, Coach has gone full-on Mickey Mouse, filling select stores with the 88-year old Disney icon.
Accessories Magazine kicked off its day with an early morning Disney x Coach 1941 preview, where, while drinking a Mickey Mouse cappuccino at Coach’s Soho store, we were bombarded with adorable Mickey Mouse graffiti, videos featuring an animated Mickey Mouse scampering on live-action Coach product, giant Mickey Mouse beanbag chairs…and of course lots of handbags, backpacks and bag charms.
The collection is launching exclusively in a specially designed concept at New York’s Coach store in Soho and Paris’ Colette store on rue St. Honore. It will release on June 17th at coach.com and Coach stores worldwide. Items in the collection range from $25 to $4,500.
“Mickey Mouse is one of my earliest memories of American pop–his nostalgic charm, cheekiness, individuality and inherent cool make for the ultimate American icon,” said Coach Creative Director Stuart Vevers. “I’ve always seen Mickey as a playful rebel at heart and a timeless symbol of joy and creativity. That spirit reinforces the new youthful perspective we are bringing to luxury at Coach.”
Leather bags ranged from the kitschy and overt (Mickey Mouse ears) to the more subtle (small stitched Mickey Mouse emblems), offering options for every level of Mickey Mania. Elements also appear in clever ways, such as a Mickey ear silhouetted marked out in punky studs on a biker jacket and on a frame on a re-edition of an archival Coach bag from the 1960s, ‘the Kisslock’.
As Coach has a broad audience, many of the items were unisex, including leather backpacks of various sizes, notepads, sneakers and more.
“This collaboration brings together two iconic brands in fresh, yet timeless designs that celebrate the heritage and style of both Mickey and Coach, ” said Josh Silverman, Executive Vice President, Global Licensing, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “This incredible collection is sure to delight the fashion world and Disney fans alike.”
Bag charms were ubiquitous, and our favorite was the “Deconstructed Mickey” with separate white hand, red shorts, black ears and yellow foot, all sold as a set.
It was all very cute and cuddly, with Minnie making an appearance as well.
