Q&A: Unique Vintage

Unique Vintage was founded in 2000 by owner and CEO Katie Echeverry. The company is independently owned and operated by a predominantly female team.

What is the brand and its positioning about?

Unique Vintage is a vintage-inspired clothing, swim and accessory brand that specializes in reproduction fashion from the 1920s to the 1950s. We are a destination for high-quality, unique, retro pieces for special occasions and every day!

But it’s not actual vintage, is it?

Sometimes we get pigeonholed or dismissed because we’re a “vintage” brand. First, to be 100% clear, we design and sell vintage-inspired reproduction pieces, so nothing is actually vintage. Everything is new. Second, vintage-style pieces are classic, which means they last beyond this year’s trends and can be rotated into anyone and everyone’s staple wardrobe. You don’t have to be an everyday pin up girl to wear a classic black wiggle dress or rock a pair of tailored sailor pants! Our mission is to bring a touch of vintage-inspired flair into every fashion-forward gal’s wardrobe!

What’s new with the brand?

We have a lot of exciting collaborations coming up, but one of the most exciting is our Barbie x Unique Vintage line, which recreates original Barbie clothing designs for life-size fans! It’s been amazing seeing eight-inch tall doll clothes come to life in these detailed, wearable designs. We have some gorgeous styles coming this Fall that we can’t wait for everyone to see!

How would you describe your customer?

Our customer has an appreciation for classic, vintage-inspired styles, but we dress fashion lovers from all walks of life – from the dedicated daily pin up girl, to the mom who just dresses up on the weekends, to the Disney-bounder who is looking for a Minnie Mouse-inspired look to wear to the park, to the on-trend fashionista who is looking for retro pieces to rotate into her wardrobe. Our girl wears key Unique Vintage pieces in her everyday wear but also knows to come to us for special occasions from weddings, to prom, to 1920s themed Great Gatsby parties.

What are you most excited about in fashion/business lately?

We’re excited that more and more customers are becoming more comfortable with purchasing clothing online. This makes reaching our customers so much quicker and easier!

What’s been the most challenging?

Competing with big business continues to be a real challenge. We hope that our customers continue to appreciate and seek out fashion items that are not mass-produced, but instead are carefully designed and curated as collections.

Do you have a celebrity “muse”?

We adore everything Dita Von Teese does, wears and embodies, but we also love to see how contemporary celebrities like Taylor Swift and Zooey Deschanel mix in vintage-inspired fashion into their everyday wardrobes.

Who are the most important influencers that you follow and/or partner with?

While we work with so many fabulous ladies, some of our stand outs are @rachelannjensen who looks like she walked right out of 1945, @the.pinup.doll who is basically a real-life princess, @giagenevieve who is Marilyn Monroe reincarnate, @lonicatherinec whose style is as bright as her shining personality, and although she isn’t just an influencer by any means, model/designer/artist @michelinepitt has especially been a vital partner as we just launched our second successful “Micheline Pitt for Unique Vintage” collaboration with her this Summer!

What has been selling into stores best for Fall/Holiday?

We are seeing a great love of fall colors, emerald, burgundy, plaids and the always popular black!
