Banana Republic Taps Narciso Rodriguez as Advisor

New York—Banana Republic is about to add another fashion feather to its stylish cap.

Beginning August 20, two-time CFDA winner designer Narciso Rodriguez will be begin an advisory role in “partnership with its Executive Vice President of Design and Creative Director, Simon Kneen, beginning with the Fall 2013 collection.”

According to Jack Calhoun, president at Banana Republic, the advisory role was created specifically for Rodriguez whose “modern aesthetic and passion for great American sportswear” coincides with Banana Republic’s vision.

“At Banana Republic, we are committed to delivering modern, stylish work wear to our customers,” said Calhoun. “Narciso’s expertise will be a great complement to Simon’s strengths and to our incredible design team.”

In his role as advisor, Rodriguez will bring his “top industry talent” to an alread  strong design and product development team. Calhoun sees Rodriguez adding a fresh perspective to “further Banana Republic’s stylishly relevant positioning.”

Over the last year, Banana Republic has stepped up collaborations, including two “Mad Men” collections with Emmy-award winning costume designer Janie Bryant, a capsule collection this summer with Trina Turk, and a capsule collection with costume designer Jacqueline Durran based upon the upcoming film redo of “Anna Karenina.”

And this month, Virgin America airline employees donned their new Banana Republic-designed uniforms. Banana Republic has also created a travel essentials range, including sunglasses and trench coats, available for sale on Virgin Red in-flight shop platform as well as in select stores.

For his part, Rodriguez already has experience working for a large retailer. He was the first designer to participate in Kohl’s Design Nation, and his collection will kick off the program when it launches in November.
