Fashion insiders and—ahem—”analysts” have been talking about Los Angeles for the past couple of months, as the City of Angels has become a key place to look at for emerging designers and contemporary brands to shop for.
And Ahlem is one of them.
Spotted on celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Jessica Alba, this modern eyewear brand has recently opened a spacious boutique in Los Angeles, a hop and a skip away from Venice Beach.
“It’s a dream location, there is an amazing sense of community here. Artists, film makers, designers—it’s so vibrant feeling here,” said founder and designer Ahlem Manai-Platt, in an interview with Vogue.com.
Spanning 500 square feet, Manai-Platt worked with the design studio PSS Design Cult for a spacious retail spot that has a very minimalist feel. Inside, shoppers won’t be overwhelmed by a plethora of sunglasses and opticals. Instead, what will greet them are clean walls with sleek wooden shelves and metallic drawers and cabinets, with a few merchandise displayed along with a curated selection of books and cacti.
According to Manai-Platt, she only displays one pair of glasses per style in her shop, as a tribute to her French heritage, “in that sense it’s very French not to exhibit oneself!”
But more than aesthetics, Manai-Platt has a conscientious take on producing eyewear. None of her glasses are polarized, although each of her eyewear has an anti-reflective coating. She also uses French-produced Cridal lenses, which are known for resistance to stress cracking and transparency properties that allow continuous clear and clean vision anytime.
