The numbers from last week are in, and accessories lead the way as the top gift purchased during the week of December 10th to December 16th, according to Loop Commerce’s gifting insights data.
The category knocked home and garden products from the top spot as, the study notes, consumers are trending towards purchasing more personalized, thoughtful gifts like handbags instead of traditional gifts like kitchen appliances, cookware and electronics.
Loop Commerce is an e-gifting platform and service based in California. It evaluated purchases made through its large network of top retailers including Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Coach, among others.
Further findings from the study showed that the average spend per gift during that week was up 49% year over year and 11% week over week. Other top categories included apparel (56%), accessories (15%) and health and beauty (6%) — a very significant shift compared to the same period last year. In 2015, the top three categories were apparel (30%), home and garden (15%) and health and beauty (13%).
Loop’s results were also consistent with many shopping surveys this year that found mobile and tablet shopping to be on the rise, with a 35% growth, at the expense of desktop browsing, which decreased 55% over the same period last year.
“This holiday season, we are seeing not only more gifts being purchased on mobile devices and online, but shoppers are buying more expensive and personal gifts than ever before,” said Erez.
