London—“’Sometimes’ a great notion…” That apparently is true in the case of a collaboration between whimsical lifestyle brand tokidoki and London Sole, the British company known for its flat (ballerina) shoes.
Slated for debut in August, the London Sole x tokidoki footwear is hoping for a repeated success that tokidoki collaborations with Karl Lagerfeld, LeSportsac, Hello Kitty, Barbie and others have experienced.
Tokidoki, which means “sometimes” in Japanese, was founded in 2005 by Italian visionary designer and artist Simone Legno and his two entrepreneurial partners Poonch Mohajer and Ivan Arnold who developed “super cute” and colorful characters based on Legno’s love of Japan and world cultures (www.tokidoki.it ) The characters now enjoy a cult-like status and have appeared on an array of merchandise, including the upcoming London Sole shoes.
According to Jane Winkworth, founder/designer at London Sole, the 10-piece collection was inspired by the basic theme of the tokidoki symbol, a heart with two bones and the colors inspired by Donutella, Sandy the Cactus Girl and Evil Kitty (“my personal favorites”).
“It has been so enjoyable and such fun developing a collection of shoes using my favorite characters as the main inspiration and so ‘sometimes’ wonderful design opportunities like this happen to people like me and I am very grateful for it,” Winkworth said. www.londonsole.com
