Port Washington, NY—In a preliminary look at how sales of accessories are faring so far, The NPD Group, Inc. reported Monday that for the 12 months ending October sales are up 4% compared to the previous year.
Sunglass business remains flat, but fashion jewelry is up 2% and handbags are up 4%. And within bags, briefcase sales have jumped more than 40% and messenger bags are up 20%.
Tech Accessories Up 47%!
But the category that has proven particularly stellar especially during holiday has been small leathergoods, which boasts 20% growth. According to Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief industry analyst, the most interesting aspect of the growth of small leathergoods is in tech-related accessories, such as mobile phone and table cases, etc.
“Which product range in small personal accessories is up 47% over last year?” asks Cohen. “If you have a cell phone, look at it, and the case it’s likely to be housed in. Cell phone cases have seen dramatic growth. Tablet and eReader cases are also expected to be big gift items this Christmas, complementing the electronics gifts of past holidays.”
Furthermore, Cohen advises retailers to capitalize on accessories and other items that enhance consumers’ “possessions, wardrobe or lifestyle.”
“Whether a consumer is adding to a wardrobe, or adding new life or increased performance to items they already have, these are aspects of accessories that can be better marketed,” Cohen says. “It isn’t always just about the main item; it’s also about ways to enhance it.”
