New York—It’s not a day you’ll find printed on most calendars, but if you are into fashion, today, Jan. 15, is a date to revere.
You see, January 15 is National Hat Day when the U.S. public is encouraged to don a hat, or even better, participate in a celebration of all things headwear.
Just how Jan. 15 got to be “National Hat Day” is a rather nebulous subject. Congress never voted it a “national” holiday, for example. Some sources credit James Heatherington, who left a shop in England on Jan. 15, 1797, wearing a top hat and subsequently got into some kind of street brawl over it.
Either way, it’s a time to get us all thinking about hats, and here, The Headwear Association shares some of its best looks.
Meanwhile, the folks at Yahoo! took a look at some recent searches to try to uncover some information about National Hat Day. Mostly to no avail, though the search engine did find some quirky searches Internet users made recently about hats.
Things like “how to wear your bangs with a baseball hat,” “how to make a Kentucky Derby hat” and “how to make a beer box hat.”
A Hat for Every Head
In the past month leading up to National Hat Day, top searched hats on Yahoo! by rank were:
- NHL snapback
- stetson hats
- fedora hats
- cowboy hats
- crochet hats
- new era hats
- men’s hats
- snapback hats
- hard hats
- baseball hats
An analysis of who was doing those hat searches uncovered 52% of searches were from men; 17% of searches came from those under age 20; 20% were from those ages 35 to 44; and 41% were from those age 45 and over…which just goes to show that hats are popular across all age groups.
For those hat aficionados out there, there’s another date to mark on your headwear calendars, April 18, when the The Headwear Association (THA) inducts its 2013 Headwear Hall of Fame.
This year’s inductees include singer Tom Waits, actor Hugh Jackman, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and actress Nicole Kidman. Cary Grant and Josephine Baker will be inducted posthumously.
