The department store said today it plans to hire 52,700 seasonal employees—a 10% jump compared to last year. That translates into an average of 41 associates at each of Kohl’s 1,146 stores nationwide. The company also plans to hire some 5,700 seasonal positions at distribution centers and more than 30 seasonal credit operations positions.
“Kohl’s is known for providing excellent customer service delivered by our dedicated associates,” John Worthington, Kohl’s Chief Administrative Officer, said. “That commitment to deliver on our customer promise to expect great things is especially important during the holiday season.”
Most of the jobs are part-time, ranging from “a few hours to more that 20 hours per week.” Many of the jobs consist of unloading trucks, stocking and working the cash registers. The hiring has begun and Kohl’s plans to fill all job openings by mid-November.
Holiday hiring is seen as a barometer of retailer confidence going into the crucial holiday shopping season although Kohl’s did not say anything specific about its retail expectations for this year.
Last week, ShopperTrak predicted that foot traffic at stores is expected to climb by 2.8% this November and December from 2011 on top of stronger online sales.
