New York—For the fashion business, The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s annual fashion awards are akin to the Oscars of fashion—and just as eagerly awaited.
Nominees for this year’s most coveted awards on Seventh Avenue include some longstanding talents as well as a few surprises.
In an announcement made Wednesday in the showroom of designer Diane von Furstenberg, CFDA president, along with Steven Kolb, ceo, listed the nominees by categories:
Nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year Award are Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs.
For Accessory Designer of the Year Award, nominees are: Alexander Wang, Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler, and Reed Krakoff.
Another participant in the Awards, Swarovski also named nominees for its Swarovski Award for Accessory Design: Irene Neuwirth, Pamela Love, and Tabitha Simmons. And for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, nominees are Chris Peters and Shane Gabier for Creatures of the Wind, Joseph Altuzarra, and Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty for Suno.
First Male ‘Fashion Icon’: Johnny Depp
All Swarovski Award recipients receive generous financial support from Swarovski as well as exposure to the company’s vast Swarovski crystal resources.
One of the surprises—at least to some in New York fashion circles—was announcement that the first man to receive the Fashion Icon Award would be actor Johnny Depp, “for his personal and eclectic sense of style.”
While Depp has been honored for his fondness for hats by The Headwear Association, the top box office star also is known for a style so “distinctive” and idiosyncratic, prompting Forbes to comment: “it begs the question whether he is truly an original or a mere fashion victim.”
Other honorees include:
● The Eugenia Sheppard Media Award to Scott Schuman and Garance Doré.
● The Eleanor Lambert Founders Award to Andrew Rosen.
● The International Award to Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons for making an outstanding creative contribution to the world of fashion.
The 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards are scheduled for Monday, June 4 at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. This year’s host will be Seth Meyers, head writer and anchor at “Saturday Night Live”
“This year’s nominees truly represent the important influence of American design,” said Kolb. We look forward to once again honoring the best and brightest talent working today. Winning a CFDA Fashion Award is the highest and one of the most coveted honors one can receive in our industry.”
Nominations for each award category are submitted by the CFDA Fashion Awards Selection Committee, comprised of more than 400 CFDA members, along with top fashion retailers, journalists, and stylists. The nominees, as well as recipients of the honorary awards, were confirmed this week at a meeting of the CFDA Board of Directors.
The final votes will be tabulated by Ernst & Young LLP, the official accounting firm of the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards.
