San Jose, CA–EBay has introduced a fashion application to promote its store on Apple iPhones. It comes as eBay invests heavily in its fashion category, having also launched a dedicated fashion store in April.
The new app has browse, buy and virtual fitting room tools. It also has social media sharing functions so users can link up via Facebook, Twitter, and email. The eBay Fashion app features an “outfit builder feature” and a virtual style gallery that showcases latest trends and fashions.
The new app comes as eBay, Amazon and retailers and manufacturers invest in the apparel, footwear and accessories classifications. In April, eBay launched a fashion portal with a more visual shopping experience and new navigation, including “image-similarity” technology.
EBay said it expects to generate $1.5 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) through its mobile platform in 2010, with more than 10 million downloads of eBay’s core iPhone application. Apps also include selling, classifieds and deals.
Apparel is eBay’s number one mobile category in terms of items sold, and number two in terms of mobile GMV. “With eBay’s fashion app, we’ve created a unique shopping experience that consumers cannot get in front of a desktop computer, or even in a brick and mortar store,” said Steve Yankovich, vice president of mobile platform, eBay.
