Billings, MT—Facing what could be a less-than-merry holiday season for many retailers, Free Shopping Day, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 16, may be a marketing tool that could help increase sales for retailers.
According to its founder, Luke Knowles, Free Shopping Day, one of the last opportunities for online shoppers to received free shipping from participating merchants, eclipsed Black Friday in sales last year by nearly $300 million and was the third largest online shopping day in U.S. history, just edged out by Cyber Monday when sales topped $1 billion.
“Given the record-breaking success of 2010’s event, we fully expect to meet or exceed 2,000 merchants this year,” Knowles says. “With over 376 merchants already signed up, including big names like Kohl’s, Bed Bath and Beyond and Cabela’s, Free Shipping Day 2011 is well on its way to reaching that goal.”
Third Largest Online Shopping Day Last in 2010
By Dec. 1, 2010, 1,000 merchants had signed up to participate, up from 250 in 2008, and Knowles hopes to double that figure this year. Knowles, who co-founded FreeShipping.org, came up with the idea of an official Free Shipping Day in 2008 as retailers faced a tough retail environment.
He points out recent surveys that show 90% of consumers spend more when offered free delivery, while nearly half will “half will abandon a shopping cart if met with high fees. Merchants and shoppers would relish the opportunity to extend online holiday shopping—the preferred method of buying for those who dread the hustle and bustle of crowded malls.”
