Andrea Jovine, who built a $100 million apparel business in the 80s and then shifted into home accessories, is expanding her accessories reach with a handbag launch, licensed to L & Leung. Accessories grabbed a few minutes with the designer:

Why accessories?

Accessories have always been my first love. I started my career in fashion in accessories. In addition to the handbags, we have been doing eyewear with Colors in Optics for over 15 years, which are carried at Bloomingdales, Saks, Neiman Marcus and more.

What is your design approach?

I approach accessories as I do apparel, maintaining the concept of timeless fashion that is trend-right, not trendy. We design for the woman who is not looking for the season’s hot designer bag, but rather a great-looking bag that has a lot of style and won’t be out of style next season.

The line consists of classic shapes totes, satchels and cross-body bags done in beautiful leather with just the right amount of detail. We do a group of bags with lovely burnished gold stud detail that gives the bags just enough punch without overdoing. Color blocking continues to be important, but moving it into a more sophisticated color palette in all the fall dark rich tones. The bags are a bit more structured and look really fresh in the glazed leather.

What about functionality?

I pay special attention to function and proportion. As a woman who has a full and often hectic schedule, the handbag needs to function for many different situations and always needs to look right.

What are your personal picks?

We have another group with Fringe, which is a personal favorite. Again done in an understated way where the fringe takes the center stage and not the hardware. Fringe to me is a timeless detail that never goes away.

What is the price range?

Retails range from $118 to $358.

What’s next?

We are currently working on a footwear license and will continue to develop Andrea Jovine brand in all extensions of accessories.
