Los Angeles–Get ready to get on up! You’ll be dancing in the aisles on August 1 when Get On Up–a Universal Pictures biopic on James Brown (aka The Godfather of Soul)–hits theaters in all its funky, sweaty pompadour-slicked glory. Then you might just head to the nearest vintage store for some go-go boots and a gold jumpsuit!
Starring Chadwick Boseman (42), Viola Davis (The Help) and Octavia Spencer (The Help), the film reminds viewers of Brown’s show-stopping, incredible dance moves and six-decade, musical body of work. Mick Jagger–who produced the movie under the Jagged Films label–says himself that he incorporated Browns’ moves as soon as he saw them.
From 50s soul to 60s gospel to 70s funk and R&B, Brown recorded 16 number-one singles on the Billboard R&B chart and also holds claim to the most singles on the Billboard Hot 100 which did not reach number-one on that chart. He is ranked seventh on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.
Boseman does all the dancing and singing himself, so cue that Oscar nomination. Watch the trailer here, and turn up those speakers!
